Welcome to Montana Eddy Hop
An informational site about Montana area rivers and whitewater recreational opportunities. Our blog space contains information about various area rivers and experiences we've had exploring Montana and surrounding area whitewater. The Gallatin River is Bozeman's backyard playground, and is a true Montana classic. This is the famous "Mad Mile," where the river winds down a picturesque canyon and contains some great whitewater. Since the run is roadside, a variety of runs exist for various ability levels. The best whitewater (House Rock Rapid and the Mad Mile) is from the 35 mph bridge to Storm Castle.
Gallatin River logistics: Class II-IV+(flow dependent). Take U.S. Highway 191 south of Bozeman/Belgrade for about 25 miles. Various runs are possible, but the best whitewater lies between the 35 mph bridge and Storm Castle pulloff. At peak runoff, this run is non-stop, guaranteed-to-leave-you-grinning whitewater. It is also great fun to run the Gallatin at low flows, where the river meanders through endless boulder gardens.
